History of E.G. Gray Transportation Ltd.

E. G. Gray Transportation Ltd. of Peterborough was established in 1987 by Eric Gregory Gray and his wife Catherine Wright. The entrepreneurial couple began operations with a brand-new 1986 Freightliner and a couple of friends who went to work for them as owner-operators.

In the beginning, the company worked almost exclusively for AVP International, based out of Newcastle, Ontario where Greg Gray had spent his childhood. However it wasn’t long before E.G. Gray’s reputation grew beyond the Newcastle / Peterborough corridor and within three years the company had grown to a fleet numbering more than 10 – a mix of company-owned, and owner-operated vehicles.

Dave Pogue’s arrival as General Manager in 1994 marked a change in focus for the company, which began to evolve from predominantly truckload for-hire transportation, to a mix of truckload and less than truckload (LTL) shipments.

By the time the company’s 10th anniversary rolled around in 1997, E.G. Gray boasted a fleet of 32 power units and 48 trailers, now of the 53’ air-ride specification.

With the backing of its’ three largest clients - Quaker Oats of Canada Ltd., Binney and Smith Canada, and Avpex International - E.G. Gray Transportation Ltd. was poised to meet the New Millennium with a skilled and dedicated staff of 70 and a focus on customer service.

Pogue went on to purchase the company from the original owners in December of 2000, thus turning another page in the history of the firm. Mr. Pogue’s 15 years of experience in the industry combined with the knowledge passed along by his mentor Greg Gray, positioned the company for continued growth and success in the International freight market. A dispatch team with a combined 60 years in the field, together with a driving staff second to none and a fleet of modern equipment, equates to dependability, trust and peace of mind for the company’s vast customer base.

The year 2002 marks the 15th anniversary for E.G. Gray, which enjoys continued success. But the year has also proven to be the most volatile for the trucking industry in recent memory, with huge challenges on the horizon.
